Spot: "Namibia," Salalah, Oman
Crew: Jimmy "Chicken Joe" Fry
Board: 7'3" Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: Oakly Boardshorts, O'Neill Longsleve Rash Guard
Conditions: Air Temp: 31C. Water Temp 26C. No wind. Slightly bigger than the day before with waist to shoulder long period ground swell working on a slab reef. Every 20 minutes would see a head high to slightly overhead set come through.
Assessment: An amazing day of surf - essentially a reflection of the day before.

Date: 15 Apr 2011
Time: 07:00-10:00
Spot:  "Namibia," Salalah, Oman
Crew:  Jimmy "Chicken Joe" Fry and Matt the Aussie
Board: 7'3" Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: Oakly Boardshorts, O'Neill Longsleve Rash Guard
Conditions: Air Temp: 31C. Water Temp 26C. No wind.  A waist to shoulder long period ground swell working on a slab reef. Every 20 minutes would see a head high set come through.
Assessment: An amazing day of surf.  After a few false starts during the "dialling in" phase I caught numerous quick, punchy and steep lefts down the reef until they closed out over a sandy beachbreak section.

Date: 31 Mar 2011
Time: 14:20-15:50
Spot: The Other Side (TOS), Dubai, UAE
Crew: Clint
Board: 7'3" Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: Oakley Boardshorts, Quiksilver 2mm top
Conditions: Air Temp 28C. Water Temp 23C. Light onshore breeze pushing small swell with knee to waist high waves; occasional chest high sets.
Assessment:  Was really fun to surf a new spot that holds a steeper wave than Sunset beach.  Take offs were generally good.  Will hit this spot next big swell.

Date: 30 Mar 2011
Time: 06:30-09:30
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Alone
Board: 7'3" Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions: Air Temp 21C. Water Temp: 20C. Very light onshore breeze pushing a small clean swell producing knee to waist high waves with occasional chest high sets.
Assessment: Fun session, continued to focus on much improved take off speed.

Date: 29 Mar 2011
Time: 07:00-10:15
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Taresh
Board: 7'3" Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions: Air Temp 21C. Water Temp: 20C. About the same as the day before with a medium breeze producing knee to waist high waves with occasional chest high sets.
Assessment: Fun session, continued to focus on much improved take off speed.

Date: 28 Mar 2011
Time: 06:20-09:20
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Jason Smith, Taresh
Board: 7'3" Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions: Air Temp 21C. Water Temp: 20C. Steady onshore breeze pushing a disorganized swell producing knee to waist high waves with occasional chest high sets. By 08:00 conditions had improved considerably with waves having good organization and consistency.
Assessment: Considering the poor conditions it was a decent session.  Very much improved take off speed.

Date: 27 Mar 2011
Time: 06:20-09:20
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Taresh
Board: 7'3" Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions: Air Temp 21C.  Water Temp: 20C. Steady onshore breeze pushing a disorganized swell producing waist to chest high waves with occasional head high sets.  By 08:00 conditions had improved considerably with waves having good organization and consistency.
Assessment: It was a slow start with only 3 waves in the first 30 minutes but then as the conditions improved I dialled it in.  It was a great session with plenty of lefts and an occasional right.  Good take offs.  Still need to hold a bit higher line and work on vision and speed down the line.

Date: 19 Mar 2011
Time: 07:20-10:45
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Mac
Board: 7'3" Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: Oakley board shorts and Quicksilver 2mm long sleeve top
Conditions: Air Temp 22C. Water Temp 20C. Initially very clean and hollow with no wind. Solid swell with shoulder to head high waves and occasionally overhead on the sets.
Assessment: Waves much improved over the last two days.  A solid session with many long lefts and a few good rights.

Date: 18 Mar 2011
Time: 06:00-08:15
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Andy Hobson, L'equipe Francais
Board: 9'1" McTavish F4 SLX
Equipment: Oakley board shorts and Quicksilver 2mm long sleeve top
Conditions: Air Temp 22C. Water Temp 20C. Initially very clean and hollow with no wind. Solid swell with shoulder to head high waves and occasionally overhead on the sets.
Assessment: Due to the nature of the waves I switched to the F4 longboard which improved my wave count but it was still a difficult session with most waves closing out.

Date: 17 Mar 2011
Time: 06:00-08:15
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Andy Hobson, L'equipe Francais
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: Oakley board shorts and Quicksilver 2mm long sleeve top
Conditions: Air Temp 22C. Water Temp 20C.  Initially very clean and hollow with no wind.  Solid swell with shoulder to head high waves and occasionally overhead on the sets.  Most waves closing out. At 07:30 an onshore wind came up, making the waves  less clean but actually a bit easier to catch.
Assessment: Overall, a frustrating session. Due to the close outs it was very difficult to catch a decent wave, early on. Over the first hour I had no more than 6 waves with all but 1 or 2 being backside rail grab quick closeout rides.

Date: 16 Mar 2011
Time: 06:00-09:15
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Tom Pollock
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment:  O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions:  Air Temp 22C.  Water Temp 20C.  Mild onshore with nice swell pushing chest to shoulder size waves with occasional head high sets.
Assessment:  Overal a good session, particularly early on.  Return to Dubai's more mushy forgiving surf did lead to return of some bad habits.  Poor down the line vision, sloppy takeoffs and poor position on the board became more common as the session wore on and I became more fatiqued.  Managed to catch some particularly good lefts.

Date: 13 Mar 2011
Time: 09:30-11:30
Spot: Buxton Tower Circle (Just north of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse)
Crew: Chris Davis
Board: 7'6" Firewire Alternator
Equipment: Patagonia R3 3:2, Excel Drylock 7mm Booties, Ripcurl 3mm Gloves
Conditions: Air Temp 22C. Water Temp 15C. Confused SE/S swell with occasional decent peaks reaching shoulder to head high.
Assessment: Fun session. Warmer water, didn't need hood. Caught some good rights and a couple of decent lefts. Better line on take off.

Date: 12 Mar 2011
Time: 09:30-11:30
Spot: Lillian St. Kitty Hawk, OBX
Crew: Chris Davis
Board: 7'6" Firewire Alternator
Equipment: Patagonia R3 3:2, Excel Drylock 7mm Booties, Ripcurl 3mm Gloves
Conditions: Air Temp 13C. Water Temp 9C. Clean Southeast swell pushing shoulder high waves with occasional head high sets.
Assessment:  Another good session.  Good rights, good lefts.  Need to concentrate on taking a high line on the wave.

Date: 11 Mar 2011
Time: 12:00-14:00
Spot: Lillian St. Kitty Hawk, OBX
Crew: Tim Nolte, assorted others
Board: 7'6" Firewire Alternator
Equipment: Patagonia R3 3:2, Excel Drylock 7mm Booties, Ripcurl 3mm Gloves
Conditions:  Air Temp 13C. Water Temp 9C.  Southeast swell which cleaned up over the course of the session and offered head to overhead high waves with occasional 8' sets.
Assessment: Wonderful session.  Caught a number of rights that ended with waves on my head.  One really good left and finally an amazing right that scored my second legitimate barrel.

Date: 7 Mar 2011
Time: 11:00-13:00
Spot: Frisco Pier
Crew:  Betty walking on the beach
Board: 7'6" Firewire Alternator
Equipment: Patagonia R3 3:2, Excel Drylock 7mm Booties, Ripcurl 3mm Gloves
Conditions:  Air Temp 15C. Water Temp 10C. Beautiful south swell with strong offshore breeze pushing very hollow shoulder to head high waves with occasional overhead sets.
Assessment:  It took me at least 30 minutes to get my bearings with these hollow waves but once dialed in I had a great session.  To include the first legitimate barrel ride ever - not deep at all but definitely in the shade.

Date: 5 Mar 2011
Time: 09:30-11:30
Spot: Avalon Pier, KDH, OBX
Crew:  Chris Davis
Board: 7'6" Firewire Alternator
Equipment: Patagonia R3 3:2, Excel Drylock 7mm Booties,  O'Niell 5mm Gloves
Conditions:  Air Temp 12C.  Water Temp 6C. Slight on shore breeze.  South-easterly waist to chest high swell with occasional head high sets.
Assessment:  A good session.  Caught a number of lefts and rights.  Lefts offered good opportunities for turns.  Unfortunately, I screwed up on some of the best waves of the day - rights - where I simply lost composure or didn't aggressive attack the wave. By the end of the session the conditions were improving dramatically but I was shot and could barely paddle.  Even though I had recovered the flu was still exacting its toll on me.

27 Feb - 4 Mar - Working in London

15 Feb to 24 Feb - SICK AS A DOG!
I came down with the worst case of the flu imaginable and was laid up for the better part of two weeks.  I missed at least 3 good days of swell in Dubai.

Date: 14 Feb 2011
Time: 06:45-08:45
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai
Crew: Taresh
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions: Air Temp 19C. Water Temp 19C.  Onshore breeze, medium waist to chest high swell.
Assessement:  A fun session with many waves caught but looking back the flu was coming on and I felt fatiqued.

Date: 13 Feb 2011
Time: 06:45-9:30
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai
Crew: Alone
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions: Air Temp 19C. Water Temp 19C. Very strong onshore.  Large, disorganized head-high windswell.\
Assessment:  Very difficult session. Location of appropriate takeoff almost impossible.  Lazy paddling, perhaps due to travel fatigue and some blown take -offs on what would have been good waves. Eventually, I did catch 5-6 solid waves, both rights and lefts with the final wave of the session being a very good left of about 75m.

Date: 11 Feb 2011
Time: 11:00-12:00
Spot: Banana Point, Morocco
Crew: JeanPierre Garat
Board: 9'2" Meyerhoffer SLX
Equipment: O'Niell Hammer 3:2, O'Niell Reef Booties
Conditions: Air Temp 26C. Water Temp 17C. Light Offshore. Very clean long period head high ground swell with sets attaining heights well overhead.
Assessment:  First 30 minutes spent adjusting to Meyerhoffer and finding the best take off spot.  Caught a head-high wave that closed out after about 75m, following by a well over head high wave that I rode for at least 150m before it closed.  Found myself stuck in the inside break and decided to call it a session.

Date: 10 Feb 2011
Time: 10:30-12:00
Spot: La Source/Mysteries, Morocco
Crew: JeanPierre Garat
Board:  7'4" SouthPoint Timpone Epoxy
Equipment:  O'Niell Hammer 3:2, O'Niell Reef Booties
Conditions:  Air Temp 20C. Water Temp 17C. Light Offshore.  Clean chest to head high swell with occasional overhead sets on right point break.
Assessment:  After a period of adjustment to the 7'4" I caught about 5-6 good waves with one particularly large overhead set.  Take off was tentative and too slow on most waves.

Date: 7 Feb 2011
Time: 14:15-16:00
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Carl, Daniel B.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment:  Quicksilver Boardies, Quicksilver 2mm longsleeve top
Conditions: Air Temp 23C. Water Temp 19C. Strong onshore breeze. High Tide. Chest to shoulder size waves with occasional head-high sets.
Assessment: Caught a couple of good lefts early on and then several rights.  Became a bit sloppy and careless as the session wore on.  After 1.5 hours I was getting chilled and decided call it quits.  Not a great session but still noticeably improved over the last few days.

Date: 7 Feb 2011
Time: 06:30-08:15
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Mac, John G.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions: Air Temp 20C. Water Temp 19C. Strong onshore breeze. Low tide. Large shoulder to head high waves with occasional overhead sets.
Assessment: Very good session with several great lefts, one which was well overhead and I manage to beat down the line for a good 150m ride. Also got a couple of decent rights.  Good takeoffs.  Still need to focus on better vision down the line and holding an edge along the wall vice dropping down to the bottom of the wave on takeoff.

Date: 6 Feb 2011
Time: 16:00-18:00
Spot: Beach 3, Mamzar Park, UAE
Crew: Khalid Chatila, John Raven, Ross Hunt
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psyhco 3:2
Conditions: Air Temp 24 C. Water Temp 20C. Strong onshore breeze.  Growing swell on an initial mid-tide offering amazing shoulder to head high peaks with occasional overhead sets.  Sheltering of Mamzar park by large jetties and breakwaters allows for much cleaner conditions than Sunset on bigger onshore days.
Assessment: Another great session at Mamzar.  Started out catching a few small lefts and then moved farther out to catch the shoulders of the larger set waves.  Had a number of really good rides along steep and occasionally semi-hollow walls.  The tide was receding rapidly and by 1715 the waves were much more challenging to catch as they were closing out quickly.  Last to waves were good long rights. Wish it was like this every day in the UAE.

Date: 5 Feb 2011
Time: 09:00-11:30/ 13:15-13:30
Spot: Sunset Beach, UAE
Crew: Valerie, Taresh, Khalid, Daniel B. and the rest of the SODs
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL/ 9'1" McTavish F4 SLX
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions: Air Temp 19C. Water Temp 19C. Strong onshore breeze.  Swell had dropped off considerably from the day before but still offering waist to chest high waves with occasional head high sets.
Assessment: After a bit of work to dial in the wave conditions improved and the session became a good deal of fun.  Caught a number of very good lefts and finished with an amazing right with a classic "stand tall" stance.  Went back out for the 2nd Heat of the 1st round of the Longboard contest, riding the 9'1" McTavish F4 SLX.  Managed to catch 4 waves with the first allowing for another "stand tall" move.  It was fun and I managed to avoid embarrassing myself.

Date: 4 Feb 2011
Time: 12:15-14:00
Spot: Beach 3, Mamzar Park, UAE
Crew: Ross Hunt
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions:  Air Temp 23C. Water Temp 19C.  Onshore breeze but well formed large and heavy swell with peaks easily over 6ft. Curved beach creates peak in center and allows options in either direction.  Fast and heavy, this break requires strong paddling skills and quick take-offs. Seems to work better on Mid - High- Mid tides.
Assessment: I was a bit tired from the morning session at Sunset but I still caught a number of very exciting and large waves.  Mostly lefts but finished off with a great backside rail grab right taking it almost to the beach.  An awesome day and I shall return to Mamzar.

Date: 4 Feb 2011
Time: 06:30 - 9:00
Spot: Sunset Beach, UAE
Crew:  Mac, John Gannon
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Conditions:  Air Temp 19C. Water Temp 19C. Strong onshore wind, large and growing swell.  Best sets available by waiting outside.
Assessments: After a short period of "dialing it in" I began to catch some great lefts.  Was particularly happy with the session.

Date: 3 Feb 2011
Time: 17:30-18:30
Spot: Sunset Beach, UAE
Crew: Alone
Conditions: Air Temp 22C. Water Temp 19C.  Strong onshore, unorganized but building waist to chest high sets.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Assessment: Quick surf after work.  Caught 4-5 waves before darkness sent me to shore.  A great little stoke session as a prelude to the Sunset Beach Surf Contest.

Date: 1 Feb 2011
Time: 15:00-1600
Spot: Homies' Point, Somewhere on the East Coast, UAE
Crew: Clint, James Harvey, George Hughes
Conditions:  Air Temp 24C. Water Temp 21C. Light onshore breeze. Amazing point break offering chest to head high waves with solid walls that held for up to 100 meters.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: Quicksilver Boardies, O'Niell Long-sleeve Rash Guard
Assessment:  Perhaps the best waves I have ever surfed in the UAE.  Unfortunately, I had to leave at 1600 and thus only caught 3 waves.  Will return next time the East Coast goes off.

Date: 1 Feb 2011
Time: 08:30 - 13:00
Spot: Tim's Reef/Sandy Beach, Dibba, UAE
Crew:  Clint, James Harvey, George Hughes
Conditions: Air Temp 24C. Water Temp 21C.  Strong onshore with unorganized but relatively big waves with occasional overhead sets on Tim's Reef.  Steep head high peaks at Sandy Beach.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Assessment:  Lots of fun on Tim's Reef but difficult to position for waves.  Caught 6-8 large rights. Sandy Beach very steep and quick; caught 2-3 lefts.

Date: 25 Jan 2011
Time: 06:30-08:00
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai UAE
Crew: Taresh, Dave Kennedy
Conditions: Air Temp 18C/66F. Water Temp 19C/68F. Clear, calm with very clean waist high swell with occasional chest high sets.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Assessment:  Very good day.  Quick takeoffs with good position and better vision down the line. Using rails to position more effectively on the wave.  Last wave included very first proper barrel entry - but not exit.

Date: 24 Jan 2011
Time: 06:30-08:00
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai UAE
Crew: Taresh
Conditions: Air Temp 18C/66F. Water Temp 19C/68F. Clear, onshore breeze, small, messy knee high conditions with rare waist high sets.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Pyscho 3:2
Assessment: Not a great day, caught a reasonable number of waves but conditions were poor which did not afford an opportunity to work on key skill sets.

Date: 21 Jan 2011
Time: 14:30-16:30
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai UAE
Crew: Alone
Conditions: Air Temp 20C/70F.  Water Temp 19C/68F.  Overcast, rain, onshore wind, small, messy,  knee-high waves with occasional waist high sets.
Board: 9'1" McTavish F4 SLX w/ Single Fin
Equipment: O'Niell Pyscho 3:2
Assessment: Since the tide was very high I started out with a 11'6" NSP paddle board.  It was interesting and I can see paddleboarding is something I will have to master in the future.  The surf session was fun.  It took me a little while to adjust to the long board as I purled the nose several times. Caught approx 25 waves.

Date: Tuesday 18 Jan 2011
Time: 07:00-09:00
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai UAE
Crew: Mac, Taresh
Conditions: Air Temp 19C/68F.  Water Temp 19C/68F.  Overcast, onshore breeze, small mushy knee high waves with occasional waist high sets.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2 Wetsuit
Assessment:  Very good session. Caught over 35 waves with less than 5 botched attempts. Need to continue to focus on take off speed, foot position, and vision down the line.

Date: Monday 17 Jan 2011
Time: 12:00 - 16:00
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai UAE
Crew: Clint Davis, George Hughes
Conditions: Air Temp 22C/72F.  Water Temp 19C/68F. Overcast, initially no wind with very clean small swell arriving on a very high tide at noon.  Slowly building with a gradual onshore wind to waist high with chest high sets.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL (Clint was bogarting the McTavish F4)
Equipment: Quicksilver 2mm wetsuit top
Assessment:  Very good session with good quick take offs, nice long rides, not many missed waves. After four hours the tide had gone out considerably.  I was freezing, tired but very happy.

Date: Friday 14 Jan 2011Time: 07:00-9:15
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai UAE
Crew: Daniel Bokelman, Khalid Chatila, Mack
Conditions: Air Temp 19C/68F. Water Temp 19C/68F. Mild offshore breeze, small clean swell with waves knee to waist high with occasional chest high sets. Lots of closeouts.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Neill Psycho 3:2
Assessment: Lots of fun. Strong paddling skills required to catch waves earlier enough to avoid close-outs. Lots of long rides left and right. Crowded conditions and dying swell forced early end to session.

Date: Thursday 13 Jan 2011
Time: 07:00-10:00
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai UAE
Crew: Tom Pollock, Khalid Chatila
Conditions: Air Temp 17C/63F. Water Temp 19C/68F. Big, messy wind swell shoulder to head high with occasional overhead sets. More structure than 12 Jan.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Pscyho 3:2
Assessment: Overall a good day. Balance of lefts and rights. Less close-outs and overall better performance. Improved concentration on take-off and greater focus on paddling allowed me to sit outside and catch 3-4 overhead waves.

Date: Wednesday 12 Jan 2011Time: 06:30-09:30
Spot: Sunset Beach, Dubai, UAE
Crew: Khalid Chatila, Ben Pollock
Conditions: Air Temp 17C/63F. Water Temp 19C/68F. Big, messy wind swell 3-5 ft with 6-7 ft set waves. Lots of close-outs.
Board: 7'3" 7S Epoxy Superfish XL
Equipment: O'Niell Psycho 3:2
Assessment: Caught numerous waves, mainly lefts but most close-outs. Take-off quickness was good. Need to continue to improve paddling speed, take-off angle, and most importantly vision/focus down the line.

Date: Saturday 8 Jan 2011
Time: 11:30-13:30
Spot: Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Crew: Chris Davis
Conditions: Air Temp 5C/42F. Water Temp 2C/38F. Nice medium SE swell 2-3ft
Board: 7'6" Firewire Alternator
Equipment: Patagonia R3 w/ Hood, 7mm Xcel Drylock Booties, 3mm Ripcurl Gloves
Assessment: Caught a number of rights and a few lefts. Left side take-offs were not at the correct angle often resulting in overshooting the face and then being overtaken by the wave. Dolphins were everywhere and enjoying the surf, catching waves and jumping near us. Chris was a bit "freaked out." Chris caught one good right but then got washed in my a clean-up set and didn't come back out.

Date: Sunday 2 Jan 2011Time: 12:30-14:30
Spot: Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Crew: Alone
Conditions: Air Temp 12C/55F. Water Temp 6C/44F. Small semi-clean swell 1-3ft
Board: SouthPoint 9'2"
Equipment: Patagonia R3 w/Hood, 7mm Xcel Drylock Booties, 3mm Ripcurl Gloves
Assessment: Caught a number of lefts and rights nothing brilliant. The old SouthPoint is a pig. I really need to get a decent longboard for NC.

Date: Saturday 1 Jan 2011Time: 1300(L) - 1430 (L)
Spot: 2nd Street Kill Devil Hills
Crew: Chris Davis
Conditions: Air Temp 5C/43F. Water Temp 2C/38F. Small clean swell 1-2ft
Board: 7'6" Firewire Alternator
Equipment: Patagonia R3 w/Hood, 7mm Xcel Drylock Booties, 3mm Ripcurl Gloves
Assessment: Caught a few short lefts but in general waves were too small for my 7'6" Firewire Alternator. Chris caught a ton of waves on his 6'3" Epoxy Superfish
